Successful makeup brand owner and beauty influencer, Huda Kattan, declined a juicy “$185,000 for an Instagram post” deal! Here’s why.
You are probably thinking that Huda Kattan has gone bananas! It’s already crazy enough to be offered $185,000 for an Instagram post. But to say no to such an offer? Worthy of a Guinness Book of records feature, if you ask us.
However, the founder of Huda Beauty cosmetic line, saw no need to accept such a deal. In a recent interview with Entrepreneur, Huda revealed a lot about her success journey. Among these revelations was this ‘ad’ she refused to do.
With over 24M followers, it’s easy to be a target for many brand advertisement deals. These are fans she’s attracted, ever since she quit her finance job in 2010, to go solo. But when it came down to doing an ad for her massive follower base, Huda declined- in order to stay ‘authentic’. “Once, I got offered $185,000 to do one post, and I was so close to doing it — I genuinely loved the product,” she said. “We were just about to post it, and my team was like, ‘This is the caption,’ with ‘#ad.’ I just couldn’t do it”.
Huda Kattan turns down an ad worth thousands of dollars
Funny enough, Huda had even already made plans for the money. “I had been looking at a car I was ready to buy, but I ended up turning it down. It was painful for me and my husband to reject it, because it was a lot of money.” Yet the realness in her let her say NO. “I know you have to identify it as an ad, but I just didn’t feel comfortable with it…I’m not looking to directly monetize our Instagram. Directly being able to do shoppable links—when that happens, sure, why not? But now, I don’t want it to feel like it’s not real,” she added.
Huda has a role model; someone whose lifestyle inspired her to decline this offer.
Furthermore, Huda mentioned someone whose lifestyle motivated her so much that, she felt she had to turned this down. The one and only Queen of talk shows, Oprah Winfrey. “I thought about Oprah. I was like, would Oprah do that? No, she wouldn’t. Luckily, my husband was able to support our family financially, so we didn’t have to,” she said. Interesting!

In addition, Huda spoke on how social media turned her life around.
“When Instagram came around, it became a constant way to share, multiple times a day, through pictures. I thought that was really genius, because you could get so much, so much faster. You could see things so quickly and get a glimpse of a person’s aesthetic and opinions. It started to change as Instagram became more popular in the beauty community, and it became more informational. People had to learn or gain something by coming to you,” the 34-year-old explained. Because of Instagram, her products are used globally and by celebrities including Kim Kardashian.
Today, Miss Huda Kattan employs around 150 people across her blog and beauty brand.
