Yes, you read right! Remember that one time you went through your feed and felt like déjà vu? Well, it turns out we’re all living the same lives on social media. A new IG account, @insta_repeat, proves this by showing us photos of things you’ve seen over and over again!
Whether it’s a perfectly shot plate of salad next to a delicious looking latte or a thrilling photo of someone on a high swing, it’s been done before. Millions of times. Sometimes, you know you have seen something but cannot remember where. That’s what Insta_repeat is about– to remind you! Insta_repeat collate photos from Instagram that are alike, and puts them in a collage. Simply put, this account is there to expose all copycats on the gram.
Motive explained by the creator of Insta Repeat
The creator of Insta_Repeat is a 27-year-old filmmaker and artist, who wants to remain anonymous. “I’m not trying to be the arbiter of what photos have value and what don’t. I am just making observations about the homogeneous content that is popular on Instagram,” she told Quartz over email. Furthermore, she is amazed by how many repetitive shots there are of people in canoes and atop SUVs—but then again, she sees some good in it all. “I also think there’s an incredible amount of value in emulation both when someone is learning and continuing their craft…Improving upon and building upon what has been done…is an important part the evolution of art.”
“There is a lot of mimicry everywhere in media, not just on Instagram. A purpose of Insta_Repeat is to critique originality in media creation through the lens.”
A cue to influencers, especially rising ones
Already, we know how difficult it is to be creative–and fans are noticing. Truly, the internet has brought as all together making it easier to imitate another person’s style.
“What gets likes gets created, and viewers will like what is familiar,” @insta_repeat’s creator says. Yet, that’s no excuse for ‘copycatting’.

Originality and creativity is key when influencing is involved. Indeed there are so many original influencers out there, doing their own thing. However, we have had so many instances where bloggers, celebrities and influencers are called out for ‘stealing’ and ‘posting’ other’s work. Perhaps, Insta Repeat is here to also prove that.
Therefore, everyone in the influencing industry must strive to produce authentic images, to avoid a decline in influencer marketing.
So if you have nothing new to show, perhaps it’d be better to just put that phone down 🙂
