GoFundMe: Couple takes the heat for seeking trip funds on IG

A German Insta Couple is being criticized, by internet users, for their GoFundMe initiative. The two, Catalin Onc and Elena Engelhardt, douple up as travel influencers on the account @another_beautiful_day_official. They describe themselves as “lovers, travellers, and dream chasers”, and have been on many trips. Usually, they self-fund them; but their upcoming journey to Africa is seeking a different source. Through a GoFundMe account, Cat and Elena are asking their followers to contribute to their 10,000 euro target — but fans aren’t pleased.

Cat and Elena would visit the African continent in late July but they need your help

“Starting on the 20th of July in the middle of Germany, on a tandem, me and Eli  will cycle towards Africa, and hopefully beyond. We want to take you all on this huge adventure,” they wrote.

On their Instagram, Cat and Elena appealed to their followers to help them take a cycling trip to Africa. The purpose of the trip; to ‘step out of comfort zones’ and ‘show the beauty of this planet and it’s inhabitants, but also the ugliness’. And the amount they look forward to is anything over 10,000 euros, via their GoFundMe account.

“We could write a long text about mental health or global warming… But we’re going to show you! Less talking more action”

But no it’s not what you’re thinking. According to the couple, the monies raised is to pay for “bike and gear, food and accommodation (when needed), internet and SIM cards in every country to keep you up to date, insurance, emergencies,” while they ride beyond the continent [hopefully] to spread different messages on global warming, mental health etc.

And that’s where the problem is for most people — the expenditure!

Many users were aggrieved and left comments to show for it

It all started with one comment, where a user claimed Catalin’s travels were funded by his mother, who works two jobs to afford it.

“Your mom works two jobs to pay for your trip, don’t you think that’s impacting her mental heath? It’s sad this isn’t all a joke, the self importance you have is ridiculous,” a user named Kyle Thomas wrote.

This comment sparked a series of disapproving ones beneath the post.

“I get y’alls message, and overall it’s a great one, but why stop taking modeling gigs when it could help finance your trip more than relying on the kindness of internet strangers? Honestly asking for money (when you have opportunities to earn it yourselves) to continue to provide content to your followers is still consumerism”, a lengthier comment read.

“I just don’t really get how this helps people with mental health issues like myself ? This just seems like an adventure and a fun trip for you both and it has no significant reason to help anyone else in anyway… and taking pictures to show people”, another added.

“This is ridiculous. Especially the reason why you can’t get money on your own”

One commenter had a good laugh from it as well. “This has honestly made my day. 😂😂😂😂😂 When ever I start to feel bad about myself I’ll think back to those 2 wanker Instagram influencers who asked their followers for money for a holiday. Oh and I’ll have to remember the part where one of their mothers is working 2 jobs to help out also. What a joke !!”

Cat and Elena took a minute to address all comments from their post.

“This is how I feel when people make money the biggest topic,” they began. “Having tattoos, a pretty girlfriend and followers on Instagram opens doors for us, it’s true.”

“We could live a lavish lifestyle and only show that, like most people on social media do. We choose not to. We have seen how people are around us when we have money and when we don’t. #grateful that we get to see both sides of the spectrum,” they continued.

“I wish you all could experience this…This situation is teaching us a lot.”

“Some people are quick to judge and speak. At this very moment we don’t have much, we are accepting money from my mother and also donations but we don’t hide that”

Moreover, Cat has decided to step away from social media for a bit. In a recent post, he wrote;

“LOOK WITHIN

And with this post, I will step away from social media for a little while. I mentioned that I’ll be doing the hardest thing I’ve ever done mentally and physically, soon.
Here it is.
I am going on a walk.
I will walk as long as I possibly can.
No sleep,
No social media,
No distractions.”

Meanwhile the GoFundMe account has raised 200 euros so far, since June 8. Plus now that Cat is on a #30daychallenge off the internet, it’s unclear how they plan to fund their trip.
