Hotel Bellora: Get a free room by staying off social media! How?

Yes people! Sweden’s Hotel Bellora is offering a free stay at their hotel– if you stay off social media. In other words, ‘the price you pay for a stay at Gothenburg’s Hotel Bellora depends on how long you can stay off social media’. This is in a bid to help people fight social media addiction. Here’s more.

The good old days of travel is gradually coming back– or at least according to Hotel Bellora. You know, back when people went on vacations to stay off their phones, and solely enjoy the serenity. So this Swedish hotel is offering just that– a free stay in their Check Out Suite, if you spend little to no time on social media.

According to Hotel Designs, the number of social media users worldwide in 2018 reached 3.196 billion, up by 13% from 2017! Therefore, if Hotel Bellora nails this, they’d become one of the first ones to push the agenda–reducing social media addiction.

Meanwhile here’s how it works:

The room uses a Skärmfri (Screen-free) smart lamp, which measures how much you pay for the room based on how much time you spend on social media. The measure is in Swedish currency, SEK.

“The price of the hotel room increases with the color of the lamp from SEK 0 to full price with a cost of SEK 20 per ”surf minute”, the hotel’s website read.

Red or white; what’s your damage?

All guests have to do is connect their phone screen to the room’s WiFi. The lamp then tracks how much time they spend on all social media– Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter and YouTube. The light starts by glowing white, which is on the bright side of things. “After a recommended maximum time of 30 minutes per person (two hours for a family of four), the lamp turns red and you have reached full price for The Check Out Suite”, the hotel explained.

Simply put, as the more the lamp glows red, the more you’ll pay.

“At The Check Out Suite, the price is determined by how much you surf, or rather not surf. With the help of the screen-free lamp, which measures how much time you spend online, the price of your hotel room is determined. The less time – the cheaper the stay. If you let the screens be completely free, you will have more time with each other. A winwin simply”.
