Whoa! A new, proposed Instagram update is probably going to put influencer marketing in a tough crisis. Rumor has it that the photo-video sharing app is considering hiding follower and like counts. This means that no one should be able to see how popular, or influential you are. People say it is an attempt to reduce insecurities on social media. But to what end? And what does this mean for influencers?

Welp! Instagram can crush their most lucrative avenue in one update!
Periodic update tests are pretty normal on Instagram. And it’s no secret that all social media networks are finding ways to curb negativity on their apps.
But when the public got a whiff of this proposed one, most people– especially influencers, had a right to worry.
Instagram is considering hiding likes in a bid to reduce social media pressure.
Now should the idea be implemented, “it would mean that posts would no longer show how many people have liked a specific post, only that it was liked by a few named handles –and others”, Bazaar reported.
And although users will still be able to see the number of likes their posts receive, their audience won’t.
“Your followers would focus on what you share, not how many likes your posts get”, code hunter Jane Wong revealed

What does this mean for influencer marketing?
Yes, it looks as bad as you think– influencers can get the chop if this update sees the light of day.
“The decision would have a big impact on influencers, who use the number of likes to demonstrate their popularity and resonance with their followers. If companies can’t see publicly how much engagement a post receives, then it’s likely to affect sponsorship deals and brand partnerships”, Bazaar continued.
Maybe older influencers would not feel the effect as much, but the newer, micro influencers would.

Instagram plans to hide engagement content. No more influencer marketing?
However, an interesting revelation seems to nullify all rumors and assertions.
“We’re not testing this at the moment, but exploring ways to reduce pressure on Instagram is something we’re always thinking about.”
A spokesperson for Instagram got in contact with The Verge, clearing the air with a statement.
“While we do often test updated features, this particular one was not one we had rolled out to a testing phase,” they added.
Whew! That’s a relief…but don’t get too comfortable yet. It’s still not so far-fetched!
