Fitness guru, Kayla Itsines, responds trolls over pregnancy workout

Kayla Itsines has been the talk of town recently, for a workout video she posted. The fitness blogger is seen in this video exercising quite ‘heavily’. Now the thing is, Kayla is 24 weeks pregnant! And some people think she did too much this time. She, on the other hand, has hit back with this response…

The Australia-based blogger, posted on Jan. 20, this short leg workout video. Her caption included a bold  #pregnancysafe confirmation. So it came as quite a surprise when some people came at her with comments calling her ‘reckless’.

One user said, “You are not allowed to lift weights while pregnant?!”, while another said, “I feel the baby crying.”

“Wouldn’t you be at risk of developing diastasis recti — ie separation of your ab muscles? I’ve read that you shouldn’t work out your core or do excessive lifting after first trimester,” someone added.

Some even made fun of the whole situation. “I feel like the baby wanted mushrooms and cashew nut butter more than this workout 😂”, one joked.

Fitness guru, Kayla Itsines, responds trolls over pregnancy workout

Kayla Itsines, who has been posting workout videos since her pregnancy announcement in December 2018, saw some of these comments. As a result, she addressed all the skeptical ones in an Instagram post– in a very smart manner in fact.

“For the ladies who are writing things like ‘you are not allowed to lift weights while pregnant?!’, ‘is that safe??’. I want to put this into perspective for you. The weights I’m lifting are rarely over 5kg per hand. I want to you keep that in mind as you read this story.”

She went on to tell this story about a pregnant friend who carried her other baby–who weighed just about the same kgs. This way, she likened what her friend did to what she’s doing with her exercise routine. Smart!

“Yesterday, I went to my friends house who had JUST finished vacuuming and mopping. She is VERY pregnant. I watched her pick up her 2 year off the ground and playfully lift her above her head 5-6 times while they laughed together. She then rested her 2 year old on her baby bump as she walked to the car”, she narrated.

“She put her child in the car AS WELL as a pram (which she had to fold down and then lift into the car) PLUS two other heavy bags. She then drove to a cafe, took the pram OUT of the car, assembled it, took the two heavy bags out of the car AND her child and went to breakfast. No one batted an eyelid, no one said anything, no one helped. I asked her SO MANY times, “can I help you, let me help you, I want to help!! She said, ‘Babe, I do this EVERY DAY, I don’t need your help haha.’ Kayla continued.

Kayla explained that she’s cut down the weights she carries, just to be safe

While Kayla insists that keeping a healthy lifestyle is good for her pregnancy, she further explained that she’s reduced her style of workout. “Essentially I have increased the amount of low-intensity cardio I’ve been doing, like walking, and reduced the amount of high-intensity exercise,” she told In fact, she added on her instagram that she’s cut her weights into half.

“I do not lift heavy weights, in fact I’ve cut the weight in HALF that I usually use. For the mums who have had kids… you would be the first to agree that there are PLENTY of things heavier than 5kgs in your house that you would have to lift or move daily (including other children)”, she wrote.

“Ladies, my point is, working out safely while pregnant is a wonderful thing. I have been active my whole life. As long as you have clearance from your doctor, you CAN workout and you can use weights”.

To end her lengthy but worthy story, she encouraged other mothers to keep fit– but not without permission from their doctors.

“No, I am not hurting the baby. No, my heart rate is not over 150(for the ladies asking) and YES, you can use weights while pregnant 💛💪 Ladies, you just need to follow pregnancy safe exercises (which I am posting on my page) AND you must first have clearance from your doctor 👊”

Itsines and her fiance Tobi Pearce, found out they were having a baby girl in December and are expecting her arrival in May this year.
