Maria the pilot is one of the coolest accounts ever

Known on Instagram with the account @mariathepilotMarie Fagerström has 490,000 followers who are totally in love with her feed.

Talking to Business Insider, the pilot influencer said when she created her Instagram two years ago, she didn’t think it’d become this big.

She has a blog where she writes about her travel lifestyle, and the challenges she faces in this male-dominated career path, on top of tough travel schedules and lack of sleep. In addition, she gives inside travel tips — the ones the average passenger might not know about.

“Best part of the job must be the feeling after touching down after a tricky approach, and youve done a well-done job with maneuvering the aircraft all the way from start to finish,” she told Business Insider.

And don’t think she spends her time blogging when she has to be flying a plane. Fagerström said that pilots get to relax when the aircraft is in good weather or has reached a stable height.

“The hardest part about being a pilot is a constantly changing her schedule. A lot of coffee seems to be the answer”

Maria also spoke about flight school, relationship and leisure

Flight school is tough, she said. “You’ll most probably have to say goodbye to your social life for a year or two. But I can assure you its totally worth it when you get your wings.”

The one good thing, though, is that Fagerström is a short-haul pilot with limited air routes. She barely gets to visit newer places but she likes the fact that “I always get to sleep in my own bed.”

Another convenient thing about her life as a pilot is that she’s dating a pilot too. Thankfully, they’re both on short-haul duties and get to spend time with each other a lot. In fact, the two recently moved into a house they bought in Spain.

“It’s quite convenient … I can totally recommend it. What people usually assume is that we talk about work all the time, which actually couldnt be further away from the truth. However, it is nice to be able to talk about your day in ‘aviation language’ and being understood as he is in the exact same position.”

When she has time off work, the pilot influencer travels to places she otherwise cannot visit while working. These are either min-vacations with her boyfriend or road trips around Spain. Through this, Fagerström gets to enjoy the perks of being an influencer — collaborating with top accommodation brands.

And my oh my her media content is absolutely lovely!

Her ambition remains the same — to become a captain

Maria doesn’t hide the fact that she was inspired to become a pilot because her father was one. But she felt like a natural when she got accepted to flight school.

“It wasn’t until I got accepted into flight school at the she of 18 that I realized that flying was something I actually wanted to do”, she explained in an IG post.

“It felt like the whole idea of becoming a pilot was part of my dad’s dream, who’s a Captain himself, and it felt like I was just copying him 🙇🏼‍♀️💭”

The pilot influencer believes that anyone can do anything, provided they have the right determination. Like herself, it’s alright to have doubts but looking past them is what leads to success.

“At the beginning I was unsure of myself but I decided to finish what I had started and made sure to do it damn well. Because no matter what I put my head and heart into, I will always give 100%. And that’s what it’s all about in the end…”

“If you give everything you’ve got you WILL get where you need to be eventually 👊”

Maria Fagerström has been flying for 9 years now and one day hopes to grow in her career and become a captain.

And that she surely will become, as long as she’s “willing to put your mind, time, and effort into it.”
