MET Gala: How our celebrity influencers dressed up!

The annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala (MET Gala), held this year on May 6 in New York. The theme for this year’s event was “camp”,  which had a lot of stars going ‘gaga’ with their outfits. Here’s a peek of every top celebrity’s look; and how we rated them, according to the theme.

Firstly, let’s talk about the theme of this year’s edition, “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. The name was derived from a play on writer Susan Sontag’s seminal essay, “Notes on Camp.”

Even though the name comes from a story, at least, this is still a tricky one. No clear meaning comes to you when you hear ‘camp’.

Sontag herself tried to vaguely explain it in her essay, saying Camp is “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” She added that Camp “sees everything in quotation marks” and is “something of a private code, a badge of identity.”

Also, speaking to NBC News, Andrew Bolton–the head curator of the MET Costume Institute, broke down what they meant when they chose Camp as their theme.

“The notion of Camp has become increasingly more mainstream in its pluralities –political camp, queer camp, pop camp, the conflation of high and low, the idea that there is no such thing as originality”, he said.

“Camp is a site of debate rather than consensus. It’s about performance, it’s about presenting a more exaggerated side of yourself.”

A simpler way to look at it is through Kareem Khubchandani’s eyes. Being a performance studies and queer studies professor at Tufts University, Kareem says camp is a way of “making profane the things that are sacred”.

He added that last year’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, is an example of camp. And Bolton could not agree more, saying last year’s gala was “absolutely campy”.

Here’s our ranking of the top camp looks at this year’s MET Gala

Now that we understand– or have a fair idea of what camp means, let’s rate the looks of a few celebrities.

Kim Kardashian

This is probably not the most exaggerated side of Kim Kardashian [ yes we’ve seen more], but it might just work for the theme. Kim certainly “came through dripping” in that  Thierry Mugler gown. Her hair and makeup also compliments the wet look she was going for.

We say an 8 out of 10.

Harry Styles

Styles has been buzzing on the internet since he rocked this all black Gucci look! He’s winning for sure.

8/10 too.

Katy Perry

Okay so Miss Katy is giving us the whole Lumiere from the ‘Beauty & the Beast’ vibe. She later changed into a cheeseburger outfit, which bummed the audience more.

Someone on Instagram said, “It said CAMP not lamp …. 💡”. 🤣

Errr, it’s an E for Effort from us, Katy.

Cody hands down looks so good in this outfit. His edges are laid out all so perfectly as well.

Many people on Instagram even referred to him as Mortal Kombat’s Sub Zero– and that’s a flawless victory.

A straight 9/10 for Cody!!

Kylie & Kendall Jenner

We would say we’ve seen better from the sisters, but they look pretty great in these costumes too.

Plus a lot of people think this does not fit the theme [ Kendall looks like she’s going for carnival in Trinidad].

Should’ve nailed it better girls… Issa 6.5/10.

Ezra Miller &  Jared Leto

These two had us thinking if it’s Halloween or Camp!! Either ways, it’s a bit puzzling to look at, so we have to give them a 5 each.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Yes!! This is camp! Tracee rocked the theme so well, a lot of people named her the ‘Queen of the Gala’.

It’s a 9/10 on this side!

Before you say anything, chill!! Award-winning singer, Celine Dion, already told E! that she didn’t exactly understand the theme for this year’s MET Gala.

She looks beautiful but, she got the theme wrong so it’s probably another 5 from us.

Lupita Nyongo

In accordance with the theme, THIS IS CAMP!

From the golden combs to the overly colorful garments, retro makeup, afro hair, stars in the back, the fan and everything else screams exaggerated African Queen.

Lupita rocked it and she totally deserves a strong 9.5/10 !!

Janelle Monae

The best part of last night’s show was Janelle’s outfit! Whew!

Four hats, an eye purse, another eye as a side bralette, the matching pink, black and white colors… even her pose! This screams camp, and the eye on her boob can actually blink!

Janelle hit the nail on the head… of her head! 10/10 without a doubt

There are many other looks that did not make it to the list, because they were either basic or way too much. But you can check more out on the @metgala2019_ Instagram account.
