Philippines Beach resort calls out ‘freeloading’ influencers

They have had it! A luxury Philippines beach resort has some words for social media influencers, who live off ‘freebies’. In a viral Facebook post, they declared they were not ‘interested in collaborating with influencers’. They added that influencers should instead ‘get jobs!’

The White Banana Beach Club Siargao is now an internet hero!

The beach club, comprises of a cocktail bar, restaurant specializing in healthy pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan dishes, and luxury dorms. Surely it is a beautiful ‘Instagrammable’ destination–something influencers would love.

However, after receiving too many ‘collaboration requests’, the White banana beach is fed up!

So on their Facebook, the put up a post saying that they have no interest in collaborating with Instagram influencers.

“We kindly would like to announce that White Banana is not interested to ‘collaborate’ with self-proclaimed ‘influencers’. And we would like to suggest to try another way to eat, drink, or sleep for free”

The post has since gathered so much attention, with many applauding the Philippines beach club

Even though the message was posted on Tuesday, there’s still an ongoing debate. In fact, the post has garnered almost 10,000 likes and thousands of comments.

Most people are in support of the White Banana, insisting that being an influencer is no job on its own.

“Whoever is curating your social media accounts, is actually doing an amazing job. Kudos to you for standing up to that “self proclaimed influencer” who wanted to rip you off,” one comment read.

“Think about the exposure I can bring your company with my 25 followers (who are mostly family members) – Social Media Influencer”, another person wrote.

“Those who ask are not real influencers or bloggers. They’re just a bunch of freeloaders”

Meanwhile some others, mostly influencers and social media marketers, disagreed with the post

It didn’t take long for people who actually work in the industry to come aboard. Many of whom were not in support of how the beach club handled the ‘situation’.

“HOW ABOUT THE INNOCENT INFLUENCERS who is (sic) now affected because of this shaming you did? you spoke and attacked everyone. Saying that “or try to actually work…” isn’t that insulting?”, one Marjorie Liwag said.

” If these people formally sent you a message, I think they deserve a formal rejection as well. Not like this. I do blog. I have a full time job, and I work hard to be able to travel so I can have content. I recently tried pitching to resorts and hotels, because why not, right? There’s no harm in trying naman, and if you know that you have something to offer on the table it’s never a bad thing to try. That’s all”, Jovelyn Mateo wrote.

However, they ended the day on a funnier note by announcing their very new cocktail called “The Influencer”.
