Selena Gomez– “Social media has been terrible for millennials”

Queen of Instagram (well until recently), Selena Gomez, has shared her opinions about social media. At a press conference during the Cannes Film Festival, the singer said that these platforms have probably done more harm than good. In fact, she called them “selfish” and “dangerous”. And there’s more to it!

For someone who has a firm grip on social media, this comes as a shock!

Selena is one of the first females to benefit the most from social media platforms, but she’s calling it “dangerous”?

On Wednesday, at the Cannes Film Festival in France, Selena, who doubles as an actress, was to promote her upcoming movie, “The Dead Don’t Die”. But when asked to speak, the “Kill em with Kindess” hit-maker went hard on the internet instead!

“I think our world is going through a lot, obviously. But for my generation, specifically, social media has been terrible”

As if social media was like her horror movie, she said;

“I see these young girls, I’ll meet them and they’re just devastated dealing with bullying and not being able to have their own voice,” Gomez said. And she revealed that she gets “scared” of the exposure of young boys and girls on these platforms.

Selena added that it’s so bad she cannot even save it if she tried

“They’re not aware of the news or anything going on. It’s selfish — I don’t wanna say selfish because it feels rude — but it’s dangerous for sure,” Gomez continued.

And in a way, several findings agree with her. For instance, research has revealed that Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat all have a negative effect on some users’ physical and mental health. In addition, these platforms are said to make millennials depressed, while others experience ‘spending disorders’ because of it.

And being that Selena is one of most famous Instagram users (over 150M followers), she was asked for a solution.

Unfortunately, the singer says at this point, it is “impossible” to make the platforms safer.

However, the singer/actress advised that we all take breaks sometimes.

“It is not that healthy to be on [social media] all the time. I noticed with me, I got kind of depressed looking at these people who look beautiful and amazing, and it would just get me down a lot. Taking breaks is really importants”

She tries to set a good example by only sharing things she’s passionate about. And when there’s nothing, she goes off. For example, she took time off Instagram last September and returned four months later!

Good thing is her colleagues like Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran and even Kim Kardashian followed suit; doing a couple of social media ‘detoxes’ once in a while.

So much for someone whose posts are valued at $800,000 each. Jokes 😋
