This sheep cat is truly adorable

“The Selkirk Rex is one of the only breeds that has shaggy, sheep-like hair – and they look amazingly cuddly.”

So it’s no surprise that Switzerland’s Eleonora Muccio took a liking to them on sight. She told Pretty52.com that she saw them at an EXPO in Geneva, and decided to start breeding them. “I felt immediately in love!,” she said.

She got her first sheep cat, Gina, in December 2017. The “very agile, curious, talkative and cuddly” cat soon began giving birth and now Instagram cannot have enough of them.

The account has almost 42,000 followers and it keeps growing daily.

But caring for these cuties is no easy task

Sheep cats are out of the ordinary, and so is their upkeep.

“The cat owner describes their fur as ‘softer than straight hair’ as the hair is finer, but warns the Selkirk Rex malt a lot in summer due to the heat”, Pretty52 wrote.

Therefore, Ms Muccio says that they get a lot of earwax and rheum than other cat breeds.

“For that they need special care, I clean their eyes and ears once a week,” she says, adding: “But you have to pay attention you don’t do it too much as they can get an infection.”

A blast into the past reveals that the breed first originated in Montana, USA in 1987, from one cat in a breed born to a rescue cat. Jeri Newman was the first breeder to own it.

Soon, that kitten made two different breeds — a long-haired and short-haired type. Ms Newman named them ‘Selkirk’ after her stepfather, “making it the first breed of cats to be named after a human,” Pretty52 reported.

It’s only a matter of time for endorsements to come rolling in.
