Threads is surely the “latest assault on Snapchat”

At this point, it’s safe to say that Facebook — and Instagram– are obsessed with Snapchat.

As if having a million and one messaging apps weren’t enough, the world’s largest social media platform is about to add another. According to The Verge, Instagram [and Facebook] are testing internally a new app called Threads.

This comes after the photo-video platform cancelled their standalone messaging app ‘Direct’. Although they both seem similar, this new one is expected to do almost everything Snapchat already does.

“The app promotes sharing your status, location, speed, battery life in real-time and more with your closest friends”

One key element of Threads would be an “automatic sharing option” – as explained by The Verge:

“Opt-in to automatic sharing, and Threads will regularly update your status, giving your friends a real-time view of information about your location, speed, and more.”

“Threads does not display your real-time location — instead, it might say something like a friend is “on the move,” according to sources familiar with the matter”, the publication further wrote.

Similar to Snap Map right?

No official announcement yet, but Snapchat needs to prepare

Although word is out, no official declarations have been made by developers. In fact, The Verge reported that Instagram have “declined to comment” for now.

“Reports have indicated that the average Snapchat user spends more time inside the app than the average Instagram user does”

Nevertheless, from what we know so far, Threads is going to give Snapchat a run for its money.

“If your friend has posted a story recently, you can view that from inside Threads as well. It also has a camera, which you can use to capture photos and videos and send them to your close friends,” Social Media Today wrote.

It also would have the feature of sharing stuff with closed groups — an Instagram-like feature but originally Snapchat’s as well.

The only difference Threads might have is the green dot indicating which of your friends are currently active (online).

We can only guess whether Instagram intends to officially roll out Threads as a standalone app or if its features will be folded into the main app. Which would you prefer?
