Toxic lake, famous on Instagram, is now making influencers fall sick

The Monte Neme lake in Spain is such an insta-worthy site. It’s no surprise influencers are trooping there to get their perfect shots. But there’s more to this ‘perfect’ destination. It turns out the water body is actually a very toxic lake — a dump that contains World War II-era waste! And now, influencers who swam in it are getting sick!

The Monte Neme is great– and cringe at the same time

Let’s get things straight — influencers would do almost anything for the gram. From posing with illusions to risking their very lives for likes, this is no different.

Plus, the turquoise-filled Monte Neme lake is quite a sight to behold. It is enclosed by a range of mountains, and it’s truly ideal for all these delicious IG shots. But according to People, some influencers have complained of extreme bodily discomfort and sickness after visiting the lake.

“One Instagram influencer who took a dip told Spanish news outlet Publico that she came down with a rash for two weeks, and suffered from bouts of vomiting” they reported.

Publico also reported than more than one influencer had been hospitalized for “for damage to the skin and digestive system.

What’s the cause?

Waste! According to The Telegraph, the lake is actually filled with hazardous chemical waste that comes from the 1945 World War II mining field. The mine was once used to produce an iron manganese tungstate mineral for craft light bulb filament. But it fell into decline in the Post-War period and closed for good in the 1980s.

This means influencers are swimming in over 70 years deposit of waste! Gross.

“An Influencer reported she had suffered vomiting and a rash that persisted for two weeks”

One influencer called Uxia , however, has no regrets from taking that dip.  She apparently told Publico that her rash was “a little bad, yes, but the picture was worth it”.

The pictures are pretty though, but whoa!

Moreover, this lake isn’t the first of its kind. Earlier this year, news broke out about another toxic blue lake in Siberia— a site for ‘ash dump’.

The ‘Siberian Seychelles’, a highly alkaline lake made of dissolved calcium salts and other metal oxides, never stopped anyone from patronizing its ‘beauty’ for likes.
