Iran: Travel couple face 10 years in jail for flying drone in Iran?

After travelling in the country for a few months, a British blogger and her boyfriend have been detained in Iran for flying their drone. The travel couple, who run the account @thewayoverland, are said to have used their drone to ‘spy’. And they could be convicted from a ‘show trial’ that usually lasts a few minutes!

So much trouble for something that seemed innocent

Jolie King and boyfriend Mark Firkin, have been sightseeing since 2017, posting pictures on Instagram and video blogs of their adventures. But their recent trip to Iran seems to be the end of it all for this bubbly couple and their 29,000 followers.

While touring Iran three months ago, they got into trouble for flying their drone in the wrong area. Apparently, they were camping too close to the base.

“It is believed they unknowingly flew the device in a military area near capital of Tehran,” The Sun reported. And it is presumed by War correspondent turned documentary filmmaker Michael Ware, that Iranian troops see drone activity of any sort as a threat.

“I fear that they have a long and extremely difficult time ahead of them,” he said.

A possible show trial

“They may meet their lawyer at the trial, they may then be convicted and sentenced to a decade in prison for espionage, all in the space of about 15 minutes,” Michael added.

This means the couple don’t get to hire their own legal aid and risk being put away for at least 10 years!

On the couple’s Instagram, most followers seem very worried about the situation, while a few thought they might be guilty.

“We are praying for you release (from Iran) …”, one wrote.

“I hope you guys are all well and get back on the road again safely! I was wondering what had happened being I hadn’t seen anything on the socials. Mad love from Victoria❤️,” another comment read.

“These guys were spooks, right? Instagram travel blogger seems like a pretty good cover if you wanted surveillance done,” a doubtful user wrote.

“I was born in Iran. We had family members visiting from Holland and other countries we had to tell them don’t take pictures of ALL THE CRAZINESS you see around you because you may get arrested for no reason that’s very common in Iran,” another user revealed.

Others have been arrested prior to this

Meanwhile, it looks like they weren’t the only ones facing such harsh judgement.

“Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, a researcher from the University of Melbourne, has reportedly been held in solitary confinement there for a year. She was accused by Iran of spying. Her supporters say she was simply studying a religious course at an Iranian university prior to her arrest in August last year”, The Sun wrote.
