First of all, we have to say Mathu is amazing! Her style is different and so very excellent. She focuses on diverse types of makeup including traditional Indian makeup, Arabian etc. Mathu likes to show her connection to her roots and that makes her stand out. Her videos on Youtube also features a hint of comedy and they are very refreshing to watch.
Additionally, about two weeks ago, she ranked 4th on INfleur’s list of rising beauty influencers for 2018. So INfleur decided to profile her and here we are!

To start with, Mathu talked about when she began using makeup.
“I began doing makeup when I was 13 years old which included wearing eyeliner and mascara. However, I started to apply full face makeup when I was 17. I wore makeup for the fun of it!” She further emphasized on how much of an opposite turn it was, because she actually hated makeup before. “To be very real with you I used to hate makeup with a passion, because I was more into sportive activities such as basketball, badminton, volleyball, etc. However stepping into college turned my perspective around since I wasn’t capable of going to the gym as often and it was the time of my life I was figuring out what why fashion senses were since I went to a high school that had uniform.”

Then we wanted to know when she joined social media and how she decided to become a beauty influencer. “I began my Instagram account on December 2014 and YouTube account on April 2015. To be very honest with you when I started off Instagram it was purely for fun! From December 2014 till January 2017, I gained nearly 7000 followers!”
This was her big break!
Mathu put in new measures to grow her fanbase and brand, and they worked!
She explained how school helped. “During my winter semester at John Molson School of Business, I took a marketing class which changed my perception on social media, and I learned all the key components to be successful as a brand (beautybymathu) ! This lead me to set goals and post good content and spread positivity online. The results were overwhelming! I started getting reposted by famous brands such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, Hudabeauty, NYX cosmetics, Smashbox Cosmetics, Makeup Forever Official, Tarte Cosmetics, and the list goes on”.

Just as we said, Mathu believes she broke through because of her uniqueness. “One of the main reasons I believe I’ve gained many followers is because there is a lack of diversity in the beauty industry and being a Sri Lankan-Canadian Beauty Blogger, many people and brands are interested to view my work since there aren’t many beauty bloggers of my ethnicity / complexion”.
We got curious over Mathu’s program choice since it had no direct relation to her beauty brand. But she said,” I chose to be in Finance at Concordia (university) because I am planning on eventually opening a makeup brand in the future. For this I need to understand the basis of how to manage my budgets, costs, future plans, etc. Also, I believe the courses provided at John Molson School of Business will let me expand with the courses I take other than my Finance major courses, for instance marketing (for social media)”.
Obviously, it is hard to find a balance with school work and vlogging. However, Mathu seems to enjoy some advantages within the challenges. ” The Pros of being a full time student and having an active social media account is that I am capable on working on both my passions at once, and it helps me work on time management“.
Besides that, Mathu says she is able to employ skills she gains at school in her career.
“Also while being a student, I learn a lot in my classes that I apply to my social media accounts”. She concluded by speaking on some drawbacks.
“On the flip side, the cons of being a full time student and having an active social media account is that making videos can be time consuming. Sometimes I feel pressured to post videos which leads to less focus of studies. At other times it can be overwhelming when you know that your followers want to see more posts from you, but you can’t post because of exams, projects, etc”.
